Throughout my teenage years and during high school I was never really interested in beauty (or fashion for that matter). However post Year 12, when the real world stuff started to happen, I began to realize that looking after my skin needed to be a priority.

I started to learn about the benefits of having a proper skincare routine in place, and I began to research A LOT about the tricks and trips to achieving particular makeup looks.

One incredible woman that I looked to continuously (I referred to her online publication Gritty Pretty) was Eleanor Pendleton.

With the Canberra Centre launching their Autumn/Winter Masterclass series (more on that below), I was lucky enough to have a chat to Eleanor, who will be holding a beauty masterclass on Saturday May 14 at the Canberra Centre.

What was the inspiration behind starting Gritty Pretty?

I created Gritty Pretty at a time when I was working as a beauty editor for a popular Australian women’s lifestyle magazine. Despite writing 8 pages of a beauty every week, I still wasn’t satisfying my need to share more beauty knowledge and information with women.

This was also a time when beauty blogs – written and curated by beauty editors and beauty journalists – didn’t even exist yet. The only blogs making waves were Swedish fashion blogs curated by the likes of Elin Klin and Columbine Smille. There wasn’t a single aesthetically beautiful beauty blog. So, I set about designing one myself.

I named the platform Gritty Pretty, after playing with words that I thought best resonated with my style and approach to beauty. I’m not a particularly feminine, girlie-girl; I wanted the website to obviously be about beauty (“pretty”) but I wanted it to be cool, edgy and understated (“gritty”) and so Gritty Pretty was born.

In December 2014, after having just relaunched the new-look website, I launched Gritty Pretty Magazine – a quarterly online beauty magazine, which was and still is Australia’s first and online digital publication dedicated solely to beauty. We write, shoot and design everything in-house and have featured cover stars including Lara Worthington, Jessica Hart and Phoebe Tonkin. Over 12 months since launching, we’ve published six issues and proudly call over 300,000 readers per issue.

What is your daily beauty routine?

Long! [Laughs]. Being a beauty editor, I practice what I preach. I enjoy taking care of myself, which includes taking special care of my skin. Every morning, I cleanse with Bioderma Sensibio Micellar Cleansing Water. I follow with a few drops of SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, SK-II R.N.A Power serum, SK-II Stempower Eye Cream and SK-II R.N.A Power moisturiser. The final step in my skincare routine is applying Mecca To Save Face SPF 50+ sunscreen.

What does a typical day look like for you?

There’s no such thing! Every single day is different, which is what I love most about my job. Usually, my diary is jam-packed and booked out a month in advance as I usually have 10-15 meetings, events and appointments scheduled every week. I start most days with yoga then coffee before setting off on a day of interviews, meetings, shoots, writing, sourcing and negotiating. I also receive around 200 – 250 emails a day so spend any free time I have reading and responding to those. I spend a lot of time on my iMac and iPhone!

Sum up your everyday style in three words…

Practical, comfortable and chic.

Complete this sentence: “I feel my most stylish when….”

I’ve created waves in my hair, put on a beautiful outfit, heels and a spritz of perfume.

Do you have any advice for ladies seeking beautiful skin like yours?

Drink water and apply sunscreen every single day.

What are three tips for maintaining a happy and healthy lifestyle?

  • Maintain balance.
  • Be present and in the moment.
  • Remember: your energy is contagious.

What is one winter beauty essential that every woman needs in her beauty cabinet?

SK-II Facial Treatment Oil

What is your go to outfit?

A pair of black jeans, men’s style shirt and black heels or loafers.

On Saturday May 14 Eleanor will be sharing her insider beauty tricks in a beauty masterclass at the Canberra Centre.

As one of Australia’s leading online beauty writers working with designer brands such as Dior, Maybelline New York and Witchery – Eleanor will share her top beauty buys, how to update your look, apply winged eyeliner (yes!!) and beat off signs of jet lag.

Over the course of Autumn/Winter, the Canberra Centre will play host to an exciting lineup of Australia’s top digital influencers who will discuss beauty, fashion and men’s tech and style for the Centre’s Masterclass Series.

Later in the season, founder of digital fashion and lifestyle blog – Talisa Sutton will share expert knowledge on fashion, and Huw Bennett, contributing style and lifestyle editor for men’s website Oliver Grand will hold a masterclass focusing on style and technology.
