Moving overseas is a costly thing to do. I know this first hand as I recently moved to the UK and had to learn how to be super frivolous while we settled in. Unfortunately for a fashion obsessor like me, this meant putting my fashionista on hold and cutting back on buying clothes!
However, shockingly I must admit it ended up being quite a good challenge. I learnt how to find the bargains and it forced me to be more creative with the clothes I have. I also gained a good understanding of the timeless basics you need to have in your wardrobe. These basic pieces create a base for the perfect wardrobe, they never ever go out of style, and they help you to create rocking outfits even if you can’t buy new clothes for a while!
So get ready to fill that shopping basket up, here are the essential items I believe your wardrobe needs! A little tip – blacks, whites, greys and camels go a long way!
A white tee
The white tee is a classic timeless piece and perfect for any season.
A pair of skinny jeans
Find a pair of good fitting jeans and you’ll have them for years. Match these babies with your white tee, sleeveless coat and ankle boots for an easy and minimal look, or spice things up and swap the boots for pumps at night.
A plain sweater
A plain coloured sweater is a must in my books. You can throw it on on your way to the gym, go for the casual look and match with your jeans, or layer it over a collared shirt.
A black turtle neck
Black turtle necks go with pretty much everything, they instantly mod up your outfit, and never go out of fashion. I wear my black turtle neck to death, especially during winter.
A pair of black pumps
Having a pair of black pumps in your wardrobe is pretty much a no brainer. When I moved to the UK I had none of my heels with me. The first pair I bought were black pumps, as I knew they’d be perfect for almost any outfit and occasion.
A white shirt
Like a white tee, a white shirt is a classic. It instantly gives you a polished look and is oh so versatile.
Try H&M Cotton Shirt
A leather jacket
Invest in one of these bad boys and you have a jacket for life. Leather jackets never go out of style and you can wear one any time of the year, yes even in summer. Style it with your jeans, turtle neck and boots for a casual, yet sexy look.
A pair of flats
Flats are perfect for almost any occasion whether dressy or casual. Your feet will also be thanking you for the break from heels!
A pair of ankle boots
I get so much wear out of my ankle boots and they last me for years! If you’re wanting to invest in a good pair of boots, try looking for a plain pair in a neutral colour so they don’t go straight out of style the following year.
A sleeveless coat
I recently bought a sleeveless coat and I haven’t looked back. They instantly lift an outfit and are perfect for any season. Match one over your plain sweater and collard shirt for a warm and ultra stylish look.
Try the Seed Sleeveless Coat
A small cross body black bag
A small black bag will get you from day to night in style and ease! They’re also amazing for travelling and when you don’t want to be lugging around a huge tote.
