Designer Op Shop– the name says it all.

Filled with glorious vintage wares, pre loved designer clothing that is of the best quality, furniture that is classic and unique, as well as one of a kind jewellery and glassware that I guarantee you wont find anywhere else in the Canberra region; this store is a designer op shoppers heaven!

Today I found myself working in my favourite Canberra store, so thought I would share with you an interview I did a little while ago with Taylor Pitsilos, co-owner of the store and good friend of mine.

With a lifetime of family experience in fashion and retail, Taylor and her mum Sharyn have built a store that is filled with extreme passion, and an array of vintage fashion.

Taylor, what was the inspiration behind Designer Op Shop? Talk me through the process of building your business.

Designer Op Shop came together from our love of vintage and pre loved clothing but mostly for recycling something that still has worth.

We began selling the clothes we’d gathered at markets and online (which was a lot of hard work), which soon after progressed into our first space. After looking at the space we made the decision virtually  overnight, I quit my job in retail and two weeks later we had a store! My mum Sharyn has an amazing eye for glassware and brick a brac, so we decided to incorporate that as another aspect of our store. After testing the water there for around 5 months we went ahead and moved across for the road into a bigger location. After a great year there it was time to move again as the building was being developed.

We found our new home at 18 Lonsdale St in Braddon. Lucky enough soon after we opened on that end of the street The Hamlet was born and our lovely neighbours, Tip You’re It arrived. Since being in this space, I’ve focused on re vamping our website and have created a blog and newsletter for the store.

If you could sum up your everyday style in three words what would they be?

Comfortable, sleek & stylish.

Complete this sentence: “I feel my most stylish when….”

I’ve had 5 more minutes in the morning to construct my outfit and I’m comfortable.

What do you love most about being your own boss/ working with your Mum?

I get to wear whatever I want to work everyday! Mum and I just work so well together, we’re really lucky. We take my puppy to work (check out the cute photo above!) Haha. We live a pretty great lifestyle, I wouldn’t trade it for anything right now.

What is the secret to forming a successful small business? And do you eventually plan to expand?

We work hard but we love what we do. Be passionate. Strive for more, it could always be better but be proud. We are always thinking of ways to improve our business. We have some ideas for the near future that we’re really excited about. Watch this space.

Any tips for those who are looking to start their own small business?

Start small, try and think of ways to test the water first before you’re too invested. Love what you do and believe in your business.

What is one summer wardrobe essential that every woman needs in her wardrobe?

For me I can’t go past a white shirt but everyone needs a great pair of sunglasses.

What is your go to outfit, when you can’t think of anything else to wear?

Skinny jeans, sass & bide tee and vintage denim jacket.

Flats or heels?

Both. But because my first job was at Tony Bianco and I’m a little short, if I had to choose it would be heels.

As most of you may already know, I am a big fan and lover of this store! What I love most is its character, and the fact that each time you visit, you are guaranteed you will find different, and unique designer pieces.
