LEARNING MORE ABOUT MY FAMILY HISTORY

On Monday morning on my Instagram stories, I shared with you a little snippet of a recent Ancestry.com DNA result that I received.

I wanted to share my results with you because I genuinely found them and the entire process extremely interesting.

When I posted them, little did I know how much interest it would receive from so many of you as well!

Also, before we begin – this is not a sponsored post. I just wanted to share with you my experience with Ancestry.com!

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I am a very family orientated person.

Family for me is my number one priority, no matter what!

I come from a relatively large family on my Mum’s side, and a very small family (that we know of) on my Dad’s side.

Being Italian (on my Mum’s side), I am very much used to being part of a large, loud and very passionate family that is 100% there for one another, no matter what.

I am also a dual Italian citizen, so am very in touch with that side of my heritage.

We don’t know too much about my Dad’s family history, but it has always been something that I’ve wanted to learn more about.

When visiting my family up in Queensland over Christmas, my Nonno was explaining to us all that he had recently done a DNA test with Ancestry.com to find out more about where he comes from.

My parents and I thought it sounded like something we wanted to do to, so we ordered a kit straight away!

On Monday, our results finally arrived and we were able to get an estimate on our ethnicity and DNA origins. WOW was it interesting!

I already knew that my Mum’s side of the family is Italian, and my Dad’s side is from the Serbia/Montenegro region, but it was really eye opening to find out more about this from the DNA test.

Here are my results below:

From this we can see that I am predominantly European (Northeast Italy, Croatia, Bosnia), but there is also a small percentage of Middle Eastern, Iberian Peninsula and Scandinavian as well (definitely wasn’t expecting any of that!).

I was also given a timeline on my DNA story over time, and connected to other DNA matches.

So, how does the DNA process on Ancestry.com work?

For the results that you get, it’s actually a very easy process to follow.

Simply head to Ancestry.com.au and order their DNA test.

You can uncover your ethnic mix, discover distant relatives and find new details about your unique family history via their simple DNA test that literally gets delivered straight to your door.

Once you sign up on the site and order your DNA kit (which is $129), it will then arrive a few weeks later with easy to follow instructions on how to return your saliva sample.

You then return your sample, and your DNA is analysed at more than 700,000 genetic markers, and within 6-8 weeks (mine took around 6), you will then receive an email with a link to your online results.

From here, you then have access to your online portal which will give you a percentage breakdown on your ethnicity and ancestry story.

You are also then connected to others that share the same DNA to you – and there is an opportunity (if you wish) to connect with them as well!

Overall, it was an incredibly eye opening experience, and one that I encourage you all look into, to learn more about your ancestry and DNA origin as well!

If you want to see more screen shots of my results, you can find them in the “2017 So Far” highlights reel on my Instagram profile.
