Besides Christmas (which is coming up soon by the way!), the spring season and Spring Racing Carnival is one of my other favourite times of the year.

I love all that the spring carnival brings – the glitz and glam, the colour, and all the incredible fashionable options that hit boutiques shelves in preparation for the carnival and for the warmer weather that we will soon be experiencing too!

I also love this time of year because it’s when Canberrans come out of their winter hibernation, just in time to hit the ground running with race day carnivals and other spring soirees!

In celebration of the launch of the Spring Racing Carnival I have partnered with Rebel Muse, one of my favourite Lonsdale Street boutiques, on a spring racing collaboration where we worked together with Andrew James Millinery, as well as with some other incredible Canberra based creatives on a spring racing photoshoot that has been one of my most favourite to date.

It’s in this collaboration where Rebel Muse Owner, Alicia and I showcase three race wear looks each, that align with three of the major race day themes, Derby Day, Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day.

Derby Day

Regarded as one of the most prestigious days in the spring racing calendar, Derby Day is a day known for fabulous fashion and sophistication.

With it’s traditional black and white dress code, Derby Day is a day where you’ll see both men and women don themselves in their very best monochrome combinations. This year expect to see plenty of pleats, flared skirts, bell sleeves, touches of lace and texture as well as some refreshing all white combinations.

Alicia wore: For her Derby Day look, Alicia opted for the Steele Lucie Dress. This dress is a gorgeous piece that features a one shoulder design and is cut from a super soft rayon that screams comfort, but femininity at the same time.

With it’s elasticated waist and a high-low hemline, this dress sits beautifully on the body and is a great alternative to the more traditionally structured Derby Day dress styles.

Alicia also rebelled against the traditional dress colour rules and paired her Derby Day dress with a pop of colour, which gives the look the ultimate lift!

Jemma wore:

I opted to stick to the monochrome Derby Day theme and  chose a more structured outfit with the Dion Lee Linear Crepe Pleat Dress. With pleats very IN this season, this Dion Lee dress makes for a great form fitting style with its bonded crepe.

This dress falls beautifully on the body, and looks great paired with a matching white millinery piece. The contrasting black shoes with their lace up detail also add a touch of flare to the look.

Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup is a day where you have permission to go “all out” with your look, and the options are seriously endless! Whether it be using light, bright and fun colours, prints and patterns or a clashing of the two – as long as your look is tasteful, then you can’t go wrong!

Both myself and Alicia chose to do exactly this with us opting for outfits that featured clashes of colour, print and texture.

Alicia wore: For her Melbourne Cup look, Alicia selected the Acler Addison Dress in Red. This is a gorgeous dress that is super figure flattering providing an incredible silhouette. It’s vibrant lace overlay and fitted bodice with delicate feminine straps makes it the ideal dress for a bit of fun at the top race day in the spring racing calendar.

She has paired the dress with the ultimate colour clash – which just works! The shoes have been kept neutral so as to not deter from all the fun that is happening up top!

Jemma wore: I decided to go against what I would normally choose for a race day look and went for an absolutely beautiful Alice McCall Ti Amo Dress with it’s shirred sweetheart neckline and cap sleeves.

Finishing at mid calf, this dress has the perfect combination – an incredible floral print, off-shoulder look and flattering neckline. Pairing the look with a similar coloured headpiece and shoes also tied it all together perfectly.

Oaks Day

Oaks Day, or Ladies Day as it’s more commonly known is the day of all days at the races where you can wear your prettiest of dresses and feel your most sophisticated!

Beautifully elegant strapless, off the shoulder or sleeveless dresses are definitely on trend this year, as are styles that fall well below the knee and have a unique shape. In terms of headwear, either subtle pieces or really creative, elegant pieces work best.

Alicia wore: Alicia styled the soft and gorgeous By Johnny One Side Ruffle Dress for her Oaks Day look. This dress is crafted from a fused crepe fabric in a dusty matte pink, making it the perfect special occasion dress. The feature shoulder ruffle gives the dress true elegance.

Paired with a signature closed toe block heel and matching headpiece, this is the ULTIMATE ladies day look.

Jemma wore: For my Ladies Day look I opted for to wear a colour that I absolutely love – burgundy. This Acler Elgar Burgundy Piped Dress features a gorgeous silhouette which is super flattering. It’s piped detail and asymmetrical hemline makes it super unique, and a step above most below the knee dresses.

I paired the look with a beautifully shaped headpiece which compliments the flow and structure of the dress as well.
